24 ChatGPT features that save time and automate repetitive work
Executive overview
Most people use ChatGPT like a basic search box, ignoring dozens of built-in features that automate tasks, connect external tools, and act as an agent on your behalf. The gap between casual and power users is not intelligence — it is configuration.
Connect the right settings, apps, and modes, and ChatGPT handles research, scheduling, design, travel, code, and calendar work without manual effort.
The unlock is not prompting better — it is wiring ChatGPT into your workflow.
Personalisation and memory
- Custom instructions set tone, personality, and response style (Settings → Personalization → Custom Instructions).
- Add 2–3 lines about your role and goals under "About you" so every response is contextually relevant.
- Memory stores facts across sessions — review and delete stored data via Settings → Personalization → Memory → Manage.
- Theme, language, voice, and accent color are configurable under Settings → General → Appearance.
Input modes
- Voice mode enables real-time spoken conversation via the waveform icon; available on phone and desktop.
- Camera mode (accessed inside voice mode) lets you point at any object and get instant information or feedback.
- Both modes support natural interruption and follow-up questions.
Projects and canvas
- Projects act as persistent folders — upload files, emails, and notes, then prompt against all of it in one place.
- Export email threads as PDF and drop them into a project for fast context loading.
- Canvas opens a live document editor inside ChatGPT; ask it to write in canvas and edit by typing instructions directly.
- Canvas saves version history; ask it to generate the system prompt that would have produced the output faster.
Automation and research
- Reminders and schedules let you automate recurring tasks — "every morning, email me a summary of new AI news for small businesses" (Settings → Personalization → Schedules).
- Deep research mode sends ChatGPT across the internet to verify and synthesize real data; activate with the
+icon → Deep Research, or type/deep research. - Use deep research for ~70% of prompts where accuracy and sourcing matter.
Integrations via apps and connectors
- Calendar integration (Google Calendar via Settings → Apps and Connectors): audit time spent by category across weeks.
- Email integration (Gmail): summarise unread emails each morning without opening your inbox; combine with reminders.
- Document comparison: upload two contracts or SLAs and ask for a side-by-side table of differences and a verdict.
- Model switching: enable "Show additional models" under Settings → General to manually select models for consistent testing or speed.
- Study mode: activates a tutor that quizzes you; set any grade level; useful for learning rather than just delegating.
Agent mode
- Agent mode lets ChatGPT control your browser to complete multi-step tasks while you work on something else.
- Example tasks: build a spreadsheet of top restaurants with ratings, hours, and Instagram links; do lead generation; book travel.
- You direct; the agent does the clicking.
App connectors (activate via Settings → Apps and Connectors)
- Canva — generate presentations, social posts, and design assets from chat prompts.
- Spotify — build curated playlists by mood, work type, or event.
- Coursera — find and interact with courses; ask questions about specific video content inline.
- Booking.com (or Expedia) — plan and book multi-day trips with flights, hotels, and activities from a single prompt.
- Figma — create org charts, wireframes, interface mockups, and diagrams from a text description.
Data, code, and web
- Data interpreter: upload a CSV or PDF and ask for visual analysis; use ChatGPT to generate synthetic simulation data for testing other apps.
- Code review and debugging: paste code or upload files; ask it to find errors or fix broken spreadsheet formulas.
- Deploy web pages: generate a landing page, preview it, then download and host on GitHub Pages — no designer needed.
Bonus features
- Siri + ChatGPT (iPhone 15 Pro+): enable via Settings → Apple Intelligence → Extensions → ChatGPT; say "Hey Siri, ask ChatGPT to…" and pipe the output into Apple Notes.
- Rub.app MCP integration: connect any app without a native connector — enable developer mode, copy an MCP URL from rub.app's marketplace, paste it into the app creator. Enables Gmail sending and Google Calendar creation that ChatGPT cannot do natively.
- ChatGPT Atlas browser: OpenAI's own browser, powered by ChatGPT; search, read articles in a sidebar, run agent actions to fill forms or book trips while you continue browsing.
