How to write great copy even when you have writer's block
Executive overview
Writer's block comes from being stuck in your own head — obsessing over clients, feedback, and judgment instead of the customer. The fix is a three-step process to shift perspective before you write.
Get out of your head and into the customer's mind — then just start writing.
Step 1: Immerse in your market
- Read competitor sales pages for 20 minutes to re-enter the customer's headspace.
- Competitor copy pulls you back into the buying mindset — you feel the sales energy firsthand.
- Watch video testimonials or customer-relevant content to reconnect with your audience.
- Avoid rabbit holes: browsing competitor ads can turn into 35 minutes of distraction.
Step 2: Get out into your environment
- Physical environment — nature, a busy street, a park — breaks the mental loop.
- People and conversation are underrated: talking random ideas with other copywriters often produces the best angles.
- Stupid, throwaway ideas said out loud frequently become the best-performing emails.
- Anything that pulls you out of your own head and back toward the prospect works.
Step 3: Just start writing
- Write even if it's bad, boring, or makes no sense — get words on the page.
- Flow returns after a few sentences or paragraphs; don't wait for inspiration to begin.
- Produce more than you need — you can always edit down, never edit up from nothing.
- Great copy is not written, it's edited into greatness from an average first draft.
- Write several average drafts in a bad headspace; return in a better one to make them world-class.
