Most companies talk about vision but give it no physical form. 1-800-GOT-JUNK turned an empty 40-foot wall into a living display of where the company was headed — making abstract goals concrete and visible to everyone who walked in.
A shared, visible commitment to a goal is more powerful than any internal memo.
The "Can You Imagine" wall
- A blank 40-foot wall at the office entrance served as a canvas for future goals
- Each goal was phrased as "Can you imagine…?" to invite belief rather than demand it
- With 20 franchise partners and ~$5M in sales, the team committed to imagining 100+ partners — and added a truck icon for each new one
- An early idea (logo on the space shuttle) was rejected; appearing on Oprah was chosen instead
- 14 months after putting it on the wall, 1-800-GOT-JUNK appeared on Oprah
