Three low-cost ways to train a small business team

Executive overview

Most small businesses can't afford formal training programmes. You don't need them. Three lightweight methods — a resource hub, a scheduled learning session, and public recognition — cover the essentials without significant time or money.

Training isn't only for new hires. It needs to be ongoing and embedded into normal team rhythms.

The cheapest training is the kind that never needs repeating.

The resource hub

  • Build one central location where all business knowledge lives — SOPs, software wikis, automation docs, brand guides, reference links.
  • Goal: never answer the same question twice. Send a link instead.
  • It functions as a lightweight version of a formal onboarding course — collect everything first, sequence it later.
  • Examples of what belongs there: tool how-tos, common task instructions, core values, contact lists.

Scheduled learning sessions

  • Create a recurring calendar event (monthly or bi-weekly) for team learning — 45–60 minutes is enough.
  • Assign one person to own the agenda each cycle: their job is to book a topic that addresses a current team need.
  • Topics can cover hard skills (email writing, software use) or soft skills (negotiation, communication).
  • Making it a standing event ensures training isn't skipped and isn't only for new hires.

Recognition as training

  • Public shout-outs in team meetings reinforce the behaviours you want to see — without a formal session.
  • Example: praising someone for fast email replies signals the expectation to the whole team simultaneously.
  • When someone is consistently recognised for a skill, teammates know who to ask — reducing dependence on the owner.
  • Celebrating what's working is a counterbalance to correction, and builds a culture where improvement feels normal.
