How an online wine retailer grew non-branded search traffic by 600%
Executive overview
Branded traffic doesn't scale — it only reaches people who already know you. Electric Marketing used SEMrush to build a non-branded SEO strategy for Wine Insiders, turning organic search into a new customer acquisition channel.
The approach ran in four phases: competitive research, content architecture, technical SEO, and ROI reporting. Results came quickly: 170% growth in total organic traffic, 600% growth in non-branded traffic, and tripled annual revenue from organic search.
Ranking for non-branded keywords creates a free acquisition funnel that branded traffic never can.
Competitive research with SEMrush
- Organic Research tool revealed what competitors ranked for — the starting point for keyword and content ideation
- Traffic Analytics tool surfaced bounce rates and top pages, enabling quick-win targeting
- Backlink Analytics tool identified publications to approach for backlinks
- Keyword Gap tool uncovered indirect competitors (wine education blogs) stealing first-page results — and gaps versus both direct and indirect rivals
Content architecture: pillar and mini-pillar model
- Central hub: Wine 101 — a single pillar page serving as the organic traffic anchor
- Mini pillars built around major categories: red wine, white wine
- Each mini pillar expanded into varietals (e.g. Cabernet, Montepulciano)
- Long-tail, lower-volume terms (Montepulciano: ~9k/month) mixed with high-volume targets (Cabernet: ~74k/month) to balance quick wins with long-term growth
- Domain Overview tool quantified organic value by showing what competitors paid per click in Google Ads — used to demonstrate ROI to the client
Keyword and content execution
- Keyword Magic tool identified frequently asked questions per varietal, enabling featured snippet targeting
- Topic Research and Mind Map tools surfaced related content to include, and defined H1/H2 structure
- Writing Assistant (integrated into Google Docs) scored content 1–10 across tone, readability, originality, and SEO friendliness — target was 9 or above
Technical SEO and reporting
- Weekly automated site audits ensured ongoing compliance with Google best practices
- Audit scores tracked week-over-week and month-over-month to show continuous improvement
- Reporting tool filtered to non-branded keywords only (excluded "insider" terms and keywords under 500 monthly searches) to isolate meaningful traffic gains
- 85+ content pieces published on the Wine 101 pillar over time
