How to build backlinks by targeting low-quality competitor pages

Executive overview

Some pages rank on Google with thin, outdated content — yet carry strong backlink profiles. That gap is an opportunity. Find those weak pages, create something better on the same topic, then pitch the sites already linking to them.

Pages that rank despite poor content reveal easy link targets: outcompete the content and inherit the links.

Finding weak pages with strong link profiles

  • Open Ahrefs Content Explorer, search a niche keyword (e.g. "protein powder")
  • Set minimum referring domains to 50 to filter for well-linked pages
  • Filter publish date to older content (e.g. 2012–2016) and word count under 1,000
  • Sort results by search traffic descending — high traffic with thin content signals a weak page
  • Click through to vet the page; check the backlink report for link quality
  • Look for redirected URLs — old content often consolidates, leaving links pointing at degraded pages

Analysing the target page

  • Open archived versions (archive.org) to understand what the old page offered that the current one doesn't
  • Identify the point of leverage — if the content got worse over time, say so in your outreach pitch
  • Note what the best version of this content should include (visuals, downloads, depth)
  • Run an Organic Keywords report in Site Explorer to find which keywords the page ranks for — use these as subtopic anchors for your own piece

Expanding your link prospect list

  • Check the top 10 ranking pages for your target keyword in Keywords Explorer — look for more weak pages with linkable profiles
  • Search Content Explorer using title variants (e.g. "protein shake OR smoothie" + "recipe") with a title search filter
  • Set a minimum referring domains threshold (e.g. 30) to keep results manageable
  • Export results and run through Batch Analysis to get URL Rating for each page — prioritise pages with strong profiles

Scaling the outreach

  • Deduplicate and qualify linking pages before outreach — expect to contact ~50% of raw prospects
  • A 5% conversion rate on ~500 outreach emails yields ~25 links from unique domains — typically enough for a top-10 ranking
  • Repeat the process across all pages found in the initial Content Explorer search
  • Expand to related keywords (e.g. "smoothie recipes") to multiply prospect pools with minimal extra effort
