An entrepreneur's practical guide to goal setting
Executive overview
Most people set goals without a system, then quit when they miss targets. Three goal types cover almost every situation: numerical, system-based, and progress-based. A good goal is clear, hard, achievable, and personally desired. Align business goals with customer success goals so both grow together.
The formula for follow-through: goal + deadline + reward = fulfillment.
Three goal systems and when to use each
- Numerical — a specific number (revenue, subscribers, customers). Use 80% of the time, especially early on. Zero ambiguity.
- System-based — a recurring action (e.g. gym 3x/week, one post/month). Best for building long-term habits around content or health.
- Progress-based — directional growth without a fixed number. Use when the absolute figure doesn't matter, only the trend.
How to choose the right goal
- It must be crystal clear — state the exact number or action.
- It must be hard enough to be rewarding when achieved.
- It must be achievable — unreachable goals cause discouragement, not motivation.
- It must be personally desired and inspiring.
- Align company goals with customer success: when customers win, the business wins.
- Warning: setting an aspirational target you can't sustain can cause burnout and a longer setback than if you'd never set it.
Making goals stupid easy to accomplish
- Apply the formula: goal + deadline + reward = fulfillment. The reward creates the "champagne moment."
- Review your goals daily — phone, laptop, bathroom mirror.
- Get an accountability partner who will call you out when you're off track.
- Schedule goal-related actions in your calendar; unscheduled intentions don't happen.
- Map out the goal mathematically day by day (e.g. $1,000/month = $83/day).
- Do a mid-year review in June — cancel what's off track, add what's newly important. Don't change goals outside that window.
