Finding your entrepreneurial sweet spot: passion, problem, payment
Executive overview
Most founders chase one thing — passion, or profit, or purpose — and end up frustrated. The sweet spot sits where all three overlap: something you're passionate about, a problem you can solve, and a market that pays.
Chasing any one edge alone leads nowhere. Passion alone is a hobby. Problem without payment is a charity. Payment without passion is unfulfilling consulting.
The sweet spot feels like warmth, not intensity — comfortable, sustainable, worth staying in.
The three edges to avoid
- Pure passion (e.g. snowboarding): no problem solved, no payment, just a hobby
- Pure problem focus (e.g. homelessness charity): misaligned passion, constrained budgets
- Pure payment (e.g. corporate troubleshooting): high fees, no real problem solved, no passion
What passion actually means
- Passion is not intensity — it's alignment of origin, mission, and vision
- When all three align, others can feel your coherence and get behind you
- Batman example: origin (crime victim at 10) + vision (Gotham free from crime) + mission (strike fear in criminals) = clear, aligned passion
Building your origin-mission-vision alignment
- Find moments across your history that connect directly to your current work
- The origin story should make people say: "You're not new to this"
- Look for critical moments — positive or negative — that shaped your direction
- The line from past to present should feel like a pool cue lined up to strike
Example: applying the framework
- Age 10: sold salvaged items from a house fire, discovered entrepreneurship from adversity
- Vision: thousands of entrepreneurs solving meaningful problems
- Mission today: develop entrepreneurs who stand out, scale up, make a dent
- Each business (e.g. ScoreApp) is grounded in this same through-line
