Natural second birth: preparation, hypnobirthing, and mindset
Executive overview
Fear of childbirth is common, but mindset and preparation can transform the experience. A second birth, just 18 months after the first, became nearly pain-free through hypnobirthing, squatting, doula support, and daily exercise throughout pregnancy.
The body releases hormones that do most of the work. Supporting that process — not fighting it — is what makes the difference.
Your body knows how to give birth; the job is to get out of its way.
The birth story
- Contractions began at 6 a.m., initially mistaken for food poisoning
- Doulas advised staying home until bloody show appeared; contractions were every 5 minutes but felt manageable
- Squatted through contractions instead of lying down — lying down had slowed the first labour
- Drove one hour to UCSF wearing headphones with hypnobirthing audio; was laughing between contractions
- Arrived 6 cm dilated after registration took roughly an hour
- Three intense contractions in the labour room; baby delivered in a single push before doctors entered
- Total labour: ~6 hours; walked unassisted within hours; discharged the next day
Hypnobirthing
- Hypnobirthing induces a semi-conscious, deeply relaxed state during contractions
- Used large headphones to block distractions — loudspeaker had caused interruptions first time
- Practiced the technique extensively before labour so the response was automatic
- Focused on the image of "opening like a flower" during contractions
- Emotional response (crying from happiness) triggered oxytocin, reinforcing calm
Doulas
- Found through agency Doulas by the Bay; prioritised experience over everything else
- Key skill to ask about: counter-pressure on the lower back — removed ~80% of pain
- Doulas also coached breathing transitions between labour stages
- Watched films on natural childbirth and interventions with husband beforehand
- Doulas and husband managed hospital staff, allowing total focus on labour
Birth plan
- Written plan covered every preference: no IV, own clothes, no epidural, no interventions
- Husband and doulas acted as advocates so she didn't have to speak during contractions
- Showed the plan to triage staff instead of answering every question verbally
Physical preparation
- Exercised every day; rest days replaced with hiking (hilly terrain near Los Altos Hills)
- Followed Pregnancy and Postpartum TV on YouTube for pregnancy-specific workouts
- Stopped sitting on chairs in the final weeks; used a birth ball exclusively
- Osteopath every 2–3 weeks for back and leg pain; weekly prenatal massage
- Practised squatting before labour — legs need conditioning for the position
Mindset and fear
- Reframed the hospital as a place of support, not threat — removed anticipatory panic
- Read positive birth stories during pregnancy; avoided negative forums
- Had private hypnobirthing sessions to address fear of surgery and needles
- Looked forward to delivery day by the end of pregnancy
