Leading Enneagram Type 9: practical dos and don'ts

Executive overview

Type 9s keep the peace but suppress their own voice. Left unchallenged, they merge with the group and erase their own perspective. Healthy nines are selfless contributors; unhealthy nines lose their identity entirely.

Force nines to state their own opinion — or their real value disappears into the room.

Recognising and working with nines

  • Go with the flow, avoid conflict, accommodate others — that's the default mode
  • Actively ask for their personal opinion; they'll otherwise adopt the group's view
  • Give them time to process before expecting a decision — two days, not two seconds
  • Don't let them sell themselves short; call out their talents explicitly
  • Suppressed anger surfaces as passive aggression, not direct confrontation

Where nines thrive on a team

  • Reconciling differences that others see as irreconcilable
  • Customer-facing and conflict-negotiation roles
  • Seeing all perspectives makes them natural deal-makers and mediators
