Understanding search intent

  • Search intent is what a user actually wants when they type a query — their goal, not just their words
  • A keyword like "advertising research" attracts users wanting a broad overview, not a PPC-specific tutorial
  • Optimising a narrow article for a broad keyword causes bounces, signalling to Google the page is irrelevant
  • When intent is ambiguous (e.g. "violas" = instrument or flower), Google serves mixed results — no single page can win
  • For clear intent (e.g. "how to tie a tie"), Google surfaces the format users actually want (video, not text)

Finding the right keyword

  • Check the top 10 results for any target keyword — if they don't resemble your article, you've misread the intent
  • Brainstorm more specific queries that match your actual topic and test them in a keyword tool
  • Lower search volume on a well-matched keyword still delivers real traffic; a mismatched high-volume keyword delivers none
  • Don't try to "trick" Google by optimising a narrow article for a broad term

Validating your keyword choice

  • Send a draft to colleagues and ask what it's about — their words reveal the natural search queries it deserves to rank for
  • For a keyword you haven't written about yet, ask: what goal does the searcher have? What result would fully satisfy them?
  • Check Google's actual results for the keyword to confirm your interpretation matches real user behaviour
