Finding high-quality backlink opportunities with real-time alerts

Executive overview

Timing is everything in link building — the sooner you reach out after someone publishes, the better your chances of getting a link. Ahrefs Alerts automates prospect discovery by sending real-time notifications when specific keywords appear in new content.

Five alert types cover the main scenarios: catching unlinked brand mentions, intercepting competitor coverage, surfacing niche keyword content, finding competitor reviews, and tracking new backlinks to competitor pages.

The core advantage is passive, hyper-targeted discovery — qualified prospects arrive in your inbox without manual searching.

The five alerts to set up

  1. Brand mentions alert — monitor your brand name (and misspellings) using OR operators; catch unlinked mentions and reach out for the link
  2. Intruder technique — use boolean operators (e.g. +AWeber +ActiveCampaign -MailChimp) to find pages mentioning two competitors but not you; pitch for inclusion
  3. Related keywords alert — track product-category terms (e.g. "backlink checker OR keyword research tool") minus your brand to find relevant content not yet mentioning you
  4. Recruit the hype man — use title:[competitor name] review to find competitor review content; reach out to offer trials and get your product reviewed
  5. Linkeradi alert — track new backlinks to a specific competitor URL (homepage or article); contact those linking sites with your own content pitch

Configuration tips

  • Use uppercase Boolean operators (OR, AND, -) — they are case sensitive
  • Set mode to "everywhere", "title only", or "body only" depending on the alert
  • Block your own domain to avoid self-alerts
  • Use URL mode (not domain) for the Linkeradi alert to avoid irrelevant junk links
  • Test all queries in Content Explorer before activating — it shares the same database and shows historical results

Using Content Explorer to backfill

  • Alerts only capture new content from the moment they are created
  • Run the same search queries in Content Explorer to find existing mentions
  • Use "One Link per Domain" to avoid pitching the same site twice
  • Use "Highlight Unlinked Domains" to identify sites that have never linked to your target
  • Apply date filters (last 7, 30, or 90 days) to prioritise recent, time-sensitive prospects
