Four content types that drive Twitter engagement

Executive overview

Most social networks suppress organic reach, but Twitter surfaces content to followers in real time. Four content types consistently outperform on the platform: questions, live videos, tweet storms, and quotes. Each serves a different goal — engagement, revenue, authority, or brand reach.

The highest-engagement format is thought-provoking questions; the highest-revenue format is live video.

Four content types that work on Twitter

  1. Questions — Ask thought-provoking, opinion-splitting questions. A "2M followers vs $1M cash" question generated 797 likes, 107 retweets, and 167K impressions.
  2. Live videos — Lower engagement than questions but a direct revenue channel. A webinar streamed live produced 3 leads and 1 paying customer from ~19K impressions.
  3. Tweet storms — A multi-tweet thread on a single topic builds authority. A voice search thread with data points generated 146 likes, 70 retweets, and 24K impressions.
  4. Quotes — Simple text quotes get strong engagement and create offline branding. Quotes can be picked up and cited outside Twitter — including in physical spaces like elevator screens.
