Key April HR compliance dates and deadlines
Executive overview
April is the final stretch of ACA compliance season and also brings several tax form deadlines. Missing these dates risks IRS penalties. Four dates matter most: April 1, 15, 24, and 30.
ACA e-filing closes April 1st — after that, every other deadline is tax-related.
April compliance deadlines
- April 1 — e-file Forms 1094-C and 1095-C to the IRS (ACA requirement)
- IRS no longer accepts more than 10 paper forms; must use an IRS-approved e-filing service with a transmitter code
- April 15 — Tax Day; federal individual income tax returns due
- April 15 — Form 8928 due (reports tax owed on group health plan failures, e.g. COBRA or HSA contribution failures)
- April 15 — Form 7004 due (requests a 6-month extension for business tax returns; extends deadline from March 15 to September 15)
- Form 7004 applies to partnerships, multi-member LLCs, corporations, and S-corps; extension only guaranteed if tax estimate is accurate
- April 24 — Administrative Professionals Day (falls on Wednesday of the last full week in April)
- April 30 — Form 720 due (federal excise taxes on business goods and services)
- April 30 — Form 941 due (quarterly federal tax return; reports income, Social Security, and Medicare taxes withheld)
Looking ahead to May
- Form 990 due for some nonprofits
- Otherwise a lighter compliance month — good time to send PTO and benefits reminders
