Walking out of a Tony Robbins event and building your own instead
Executive overview
Attending a $2,000 Tony Robbins event hoping for magic fixes to relationship and work problems led to walking out halfway through. The event's high-energy format, supplement sales, and 15-second "solutions" to deep personal issues felt shallow rather than useful.
The alternative — a self-designed personal development day (PDD) — proved more effective: a long hike with a close friend, honest reflection on hard questions, and reviewing relevant books and materials.
The answers are already inside you. The hard part is facing the questions you're avoiding and acting on what you already know.
What didn't work at the Tony Robbins event
- Rapid-fire audience "healings" — complex trauma addressed in 15 seconds
- Forced intimacy with strangers (back massages, deeply personal sharing)
- A full day dedicated to selling supplements
- Constant physical state-changes (standing/sitting) felt manipulative rather than clarifying
- 14,000 problems being addressed at once with no depth on any
How to run your own personal development day
- Identify the 2–3 questions you most want answered
- Choose an activity that helps you think (hike, walk, sauna, journaling)
- Bring one trusted person for deep, honest conversation
- Review targeted books or materials on your specific problems
- Add something enjoyable — the day doesn't have to be painful
- Write down your top questions, then write the obvious hard answers you're avoiding
Before spending $2,000 on a self-help event
- Read the speaker's books first to gauge fit before committing
- Expect more from yourself than from any external guru
- Identify who in your network is genuinely expert in your problem area
- A coach or peer group often delivers more targeted value
- The bottleneck is almost never information — it's taking action on what you already know
