How to use internal links to boost Google rankings

Executive overview

Many sites have untapped ranking potential sitting in their existing pages. The middleman method uses authoritative pages on your site to pass page rank to target pages via internal links — no new backlinks required.

Three conditions must be met: the linking page has backlinks to pass, the target page matches searcher intent, and the competition is beatable.

Internal links alone rarely move a page to position 1 — combine with content updates and external link building for maximum impact.

The middleman method: three requirements

  • A linking page needs quality backlinks to have page rank worth passing
  • The target page must match the searcher's intent, or page rank won't fix rankings
  • Compete against pages at a similar authority level, not dominant players

Finding target pages to rank higher

  • Use Ahrefs Site Explorer > Organic Keywords report, filtered to positions 2–10
  • Prioritise pages with high business value, good traffic potential, and no sustained top ranking
  • Check the SERP to confirm your page matches intent before investing in links
  • Assess competitor backlink profiles to confirm the gap is closeable

Finding pages to link from

  • Google site search: site:yourdomain.com/blog [keyword] to find contextually relevant pages
  • Ahrefs Site Audit > Internal Link Opportunities report: filter by target URL to get source pages, anchor context, and recommendations
  • Best by Links report in Site Explorer: filter for live 200-status pages, then assess relevance by title/URL and authority by URL Rating or referring domains
  • Linking from high-authority pages is ideal, but any contextually relevant page adds value

Gauging link value

  • URL Rating (UR) measures page-level authority in Ahrefs
  • Referring domains is a proxy for how much page rank a page can pass
  • A page with many referring domains and topical overlap is the best donor

Tracking results

  • Add target keywords to a rank tracker with a tag and annotation for when links were added
  • Monitor over weeks to months — internal links can deliver immediate or delayed ranking lifts
  • If rankings don't move, internal links may not be the limiting factor
