Five business types that rarely achieve escape velocity

Executive overview

Most new entrepreneurs pick businesses that feel exciting or accessible, but these tend to have structural flaws that prevent profitability. Food, fixed-location, high-capex, heavily regulated, and "sexy" businesses all share one trait: they consume capital faster than they generate it, capping the liftoff moment indefinitely.

The businesses most worth starting are those built on intellectual property, media, software, or data — they scale without proportional reinvestment.

The five business types to avoid

  1. Food businesses — perishable inventory creates waste risk; margins are historically low outside a few categories like confectionery; regulation adds cost and complexity.
  2. Fixed-location, geographically limited businesses — restaurants, salons, and hotels require large upfront fit-out costs; growth means replicating that capital spend at every new location; an area manager layer eats profits before escape velocity is reached.
  3. High-capex businesses — physical stock, R&D-heavy models, large headcounts, or cutting-edge technology requirements mean profits are continuously recycled into expansion rather than compounding; suited only to experienced operators with private equity backing.
  4. Highly regulated businesses — a shared rulebook forces near-identical behaviour across competitors; differentiation through staff, brand, or marketing is easily copied when the core product is constrained.
  5. "Sexy" or lifestyle businesses — yoga studios, nightclubs, photography, and fashion attract participants who can afford to lose money, saturating the market with non-profit-motivated operators; competition is irrational.

What to target instead

  • Intellectual property, media, software, and data businesses scale without proportional capital reinvestment.
  • Not geographically limited — addressable market is global by default.
  • Proprietary assets in these categories create defensible value and strong exit multiples.
  • Combining a personal origin story or mission with these four categories improves the odds of building a winner.
