Five ingredients of a high-performance environment for entrepreneurs
Executive overview
Your environment shapes your results more than your individual effort. Surrounding yourself with the wrong people normalizes mediocre outcomes; the right environment makes success the path of least resistance.
A high-performance environment has five identifiable ingredients. Find or build one that has all five, and the environment does the heavy lifting.
The five ingredients
- Clear goals — everyone in the group is focused on a few aligned outcomes; not complaining, not playing safe
- Strategies and best practices — proven methods for achieving those goals are actively shared and taught
- Screened peer group — members are selected, not open-access; unvetted entrants dilute quality and introduce negativity
- External accountability — a third party tracks progress; leaderboards, dashboards, and real consequences for being on or off track; self-accountability is not accountability
- Resources — the environment gives direct access to what you need: investors, partners, software, connections
Why environment beats willpower
- Humans normalize the results of the people around them
- Spending time with people who have built $100M companies makes $100M feel achievable
- The wrong peer group makes small results feel normal without you noticing
- You cannot opt out of social influence — you can only choose which influence you accept
What to look for when evaluating a group
- Is there a joining criterion, or can anyone walk in?
- Are the group's goals aligned with yours — or is the default culture complaint and caution?
- Is someone objectively tracking performance, or is it self-reported?
- Do consequences exist for missing targets?
- Does the environment give you access to resources you couldn't reach alone?
