Flip the script: use Be-Do-Have to break through stuck areas

Executive overview

Most people believe they need to have something first before they'll do the things that make them be the person they want to be. That order is backwards. The Be-Do-Have framework reverses it: identify who you'd be at the end, then determine what you'd do, and the results follow.

Start with who you're being — the doing and having take care of themselves.

The wrong default: Have → Do → Be

  • Common belief: once I have the body/time/money, I'll do the things, then I'll be great
  • This keeps people stuck — the "have" never arrives on its own
  • Fitness example: waiting for better genetics or circumstances meant resigned inaction

Applying Be-Do-Have in practice

  • Identify an area of life that isn't working
  • Write down 10–12 words describing who you'd be if everything were going perfectly
  • Look hard at those words — they're available to you right now, regardless of circumstances
  • Commit to embodying those qualities immediately, before conditions change
  • From that identity, ask: what would I naturally do? Let that drive action
  • Results ("have") emerge from that sequence, not the other way around

The fitness example

  • Bill identified he was "being resigned" about his health — avoiding workouts despite paying for a trainer
  • His target-state words included: active, alive, inspired
  • He recognised those qualities were accessible immediately — no weight loss required first
  • Chose a triathlon as his first "doing" goal — something that felt exciting, not obligatory
  • Went on to complete ~45 triathlons and marathons over 11 years
  • Body, self-image, and results changed as a consequence of the identity shift
