How to merge duplicate tasks in ClickUp

Duplicate tasks in ClickUp create confusion: team members treat them as separate items and add conflicting data. The merge feature dissolves one task into another, combining descriptions, comments, attachments, and subtasks while inheriting the destination task's field values for any conflicts.

One critical risk: if both tasks have different values in the same field, the destination task always wins and the dissolving task's value is permanently lost.

Always put sensitive data into descriptions, comments, or tags before merging — not into single-value fields.

How merging works

• Find the task with less information — this becomes the dissolving task.
• Right-click (non-dominant mouse button) on the dissolving task and select Merge.
• Paste the destination task's link rather than searching by name — avoids confusion with identically named tasks.
• ClickUp instantly dissolves the selected task into the destination.

What gets merged vs. replaced

• Collections (descriptions, comments, attachments, subtasks) are combined from both tasks.
• If one task has a field value and the other is blank, the filled value wins.
• If both tasks have different values in the same field, the destination task's value wins and the other is lost.
• Status, permissions, and list membership are inherited from the destination task.

Custom field mismatches

• If the dissolving task has custom fields that don't exist in the destination list, ClickUp prompts you.
• Toggle on the fields you want to carry over — they will be added to the entire destination list.
• Skipping this step means that custom field data is lost.

When to skip the merge feature

• Any field with sensitive or unique data in both tasks — one value will be silently dropped.
• Consider manually copying field values into a description or comment first, then merging.
