How to generate startup ideas: eight ideas you can steal

Executive overview

Most founders struggle to generate startup ideas because they evaluate too narrowly or too personally. Rob Walling and Justin Vincent work through eight real ideas across three funding tiers — solo bootstrapper, ambitious bootstrapper, and VC — applying a structured lens to each.

The framework is simple: match the idea to your context (funding, skills, risk tolerance), validate the problem fast, and treat competition as market proof rather than a blocker.

The quality of an idea matters less than how quickly you can test whether the problem is real.

Two solo bootstrapper ideas

  • Meeting transcription SaaS — OpenAI Whisper finally makes audio-to-text accurate enough for noisy calls; build a team note-sharing layer on top
  • Target buyers: note-takers in brainstorming meetings, not update or planning meetings
  • Best feature differentiator: seamless capture (OS-level or Zoom plugin), not just transcription
  • Online time capsule — encrypted file upload with a timed release to an email or public stream
  • Possible users: journalists under embargo, families, PR campaigns
  • Key risk: long-term reliability of a solopreneur product undermines trust for multi-year locks

Four ambitious bootstrapper ideas

  • Drone pest control — autonomous drone docks on a roof, uses AI vision to detect and chase birds or wildlife
  • Hardware is off-the-shelf; value is in the software layer and autonomous charging
  • Better sold to campuses and facilities than individual apartment complexes
  • Organic farming is a strong adjacent market (pesticide-free pest deterrence)
  • Pre-recorded async job interviews — applicants respond live to pre-recorded video questions, removing scheduling friction
  • Creates a ranked showreel for hiring managers before any human time is spent
  • Works best for customer-facing roles; developers resist video; audio-only reduces bias risk
  • Special diet recipe builder — scrape recipes across the web, filter by dietary framework (vegan, paleo, gluten-free), sell to nutritionists or as B2B
  • Copyright exposure is unresolved; B2C unit economics are weak; rated lowest of the eight
  • AI casting director tool — generate an ideal face in Midjourney/DALL-E, then reverse-image-search talent databases and IMDB for matches
  • Saves hours of manual photo review; fits existing casting workflow
  • Validate by interviewing 20–30 casting directors to confirm they start from physical look

Two VC-scale ideas

  1. Cash burn alert for VCs — plug into portfolio company accounts, flag anomalous spend heuristics, alert investors in real time; could be offered as a deal sweetener for better terms
  2. No-code ETL data pipeline tool — ingest, transform, and export petabyte-scale data between systems with auto-scaling parallel processing; think Yahoo Pipes at industrial scale
    • Bootstrappable entry point: start with a single migration path (e.g. MySQL to Postgres)
    • Bottleneck risk: throughput is often limited by source/destination systems, not the transform layer

Rob's verdict

  • Top picks: ETL data pipeline (boring, technical, clear problem) and AI casting director (novel use of new tech, early-mover advantage)
  • Bottom picks: recipe builder (B2C, copyright risk) and online time capsule (problem clarity)
  • Meeting transcription and drone pest control sit in the middle — real problems, uncertain buyers
