Lessons from Dan Miller: Productivity, generosity, and lifelong learning
Executive overview
Dan Miller, author of 48 Days to the Work You Love, died in January 2024 after a rapid pancreatic cancer diagnosis. He was 76, healthy, and podcasting until the end.
Host Erik Fisher shares three personal lessons drawn from years of in-person time with Miller: a morning routine that prioritises calm over hustle, a generosity of time that defied his stature, and a commitment to learning that never stopped.
The most productive people protect their mornings, stay accessible, and never stop being students.
Dan's morning routine
- Woke without an alarm — trained his body clock through a consistent bedtime
- Started with 30+ minutes on the treadmill to boost physical and mental energy
- Followed with a nutrient-dense breakfast (oatmeal, smoothies, plant-based foods)
- Wrote a short guide on this practice: The Rudder of the Day (free PDF)
- Approach was calm and deliberate — not hustle-oriented
Approachability and generosity
- Consistently gave time to anyone who approached him at conferences
- Offered his Franklin, Tennessee "Sanctuary" facility as free accommodation to trusted contacts — used it multiple times
- Kept structured "open slots" in his schedule for drop-in coaching and coffee meetings
- Maintained these habits as an introvert: recharged alone, then showed up fully present
- His lack of ego made people hesitant to ask — but he always said yes
Lifelong learning
- Attended Jeff Goins' Tribe Conference as a participant, not a speaker — and took detailed notes throughout every session
- Sat with less-experienced attendees, fully engaged, regardless of his own status
- Observing this shifted Erik and others toward smaller, more intimate events with deeper engagement
- Lesson: no level of experience justifies checking out — curiosity compounds
