How to keep momentum going after a win
Executive overview
A win can kill momentum faster than a loss. The moment you celebrate without defining what comes next, your brain — and your team — treats the story as over.
Acknowledge the win briefly, then immediately name the next goal. Don't roll the credits while the movie is still playing.
The momentum trap
- Internal celebration after a good shot causes you to miss the return — the same pattern applies to business wins.
- Prolonged celebrating signals to your subconscious that the story is done.
- "Rolling the credits" causes teams to mentally check out.
How to follow a win
- Acknowledge the team's contribution — don't skip recognition.
- In the same breath, name the next goal.
- Keep the sequence: win → acknowledge → define next win → move.
The exercise
- Write down your last win.
- Below it, write the next win.
- Below that, write the one after.
- Repeat — the story doesn't end with one win.
