How to find a technical cofounder as a non-technical founder

Most non-technical founders search too broadly when the answer is usually in their existing network. Start with people you already know and trust. Work outward only if those conversations fail.

If no one in your network codes, the fastest fix is to work at a small tech startup and build that network deliberately.

Start with your existing network

• List every friend who codes professionally — not as a hobby, as their primary job.
• Rank your top five and make each a real offer: equity, salary expectations, and a clear ask.
• "Would you co-found this with me at 40% equity?" beats "can you help me on weekends?"
• Engineers get asked to do side work constantly; a co-founder offer is different and rarer.

If friends say no, turn to co-workers

• Apply the same process: list, rank, make real offers.
• People you already work alongside are pre-vetted for compatibility.

Build an engineering network from scratch

• If your network has no engineers, go work at a tech startup — not a big company like Google or Facebook.
• At large companies, non-technical hires are kept far from engineering.
• At a startup of 50 or fewer people, everyone sits together, eats together, and builds together.
• Friendships form naturally; those friends bring more engineers into your orbit.
• This can take one to two years — that's acceptable if you're building something for a decade or more.

College and learning to code

• College is one of the best co-founder hunting grounds and most people underuse it.
• If you're still in school and don't code, make friends with people who are learning to code now.
• That relationship may pay off two, five, or ten years later.
• Learning to code yourself is also a viable path — resources like Codecademy and Lambda School make it more accessible than it used to be.
