Making your own good fortune: the Stoic case against passive luck

Original source details coming soon.

Executive overview

Most people treat luck as something that happens to them. The Stoics treated it as something they made. Marcus Aurelius writes that true good fortune is good character, good intentions, and good actions — not random circumstance.

When justice or effort hits a wall, the Stoic move is not despair or rage but acceptance followed by renewed action. The obstacle becomes the material to work with.

You don't wait for fortune — you build the conditions that make fortune mostly unnecessary.

The Stoic framework for justice and setbacks

  • Persuade, argue, vote, donate, build coalitions — exhaust the available levers
  • When blocked, practice acceptance and peaceability rather than destructive reaction
  • Use the setback to exercise other virtues: patience, creativity, compassion, determination
  • John Doar's model: didn't burn courthouses, kept returning, chipped away at a large project over time
  • Carl Jung's advice for despair: "quietly do the next and most necessary thing"
  • Go back with the wisdom to change course when needed — persistence is not rigidity

Making your own good fortune

  • Marcus Aurelius 5.37: "True good fortune is what you make for yourself — good character, good intentions, and good actions"
  • The proverb "diligence is the mother of good luck" dates to at least the 16th century
  • Coleman Cox (1920s): "The harder I work, the more luck I seem to have"
  • Preparation doesn't guarantee luck, but it increases the probability and reduces dependence on it
  • The deeper Stoic reframe: there is no good or bad luck — all events are raw material
  • Amor fati applied: whatever happens can be made into something useful
  • Finding a mistake in a book is not bad luck — it's a chance to correct, improve the process, reconnect with collaborators
