• Rather than despising the role, he declared the distinction belongs to the man, not the office — then transformed it.
• Musonius Rufus, exiled and forced to dig ditches, asked: "Does it pain you if I dig for the sake of Greece?"
• What you do well is noble regardless of its status, as long as it is the right thing.

A new way to pray

• Most prayer asks the gods to deliver outcomes — this outsources responsibility and creates dependence.
• Marcus Aurelius didn't ask for pleasures or comforts; he asked for the inner strength not to need them.
• Epictetus: "Sit and pray your nose doesn't run — or rather just wipe your own nose."
• Reframe desires: instead of praying for something, pray to stop needing it.
• Musashi's principle applies: "Worship the gods and Buddha, but do not rely on them." Train to make luck irrelevant.
