AI, branding, and the shrinking window for free social media growth
Executive overview
Convenience has always beaten loyalty, and AI agents will make that gap permanent. Brands that aren't chosen by name will be chosen generically — by whoever controls the toll booth. The window for free, organic social distribution is real but finite; the phone as a primary device has maybe a decade left.
If you are not a named brand and not building organic social content today, AI will route around you.
Brand is the only moat in an AI-driven world
- When AI agents shop for you, unnamed businesses lose by default — the platform picks the winner
- "I need pizza" routes to whoever owns the algorithm; "I need Pizza Hut" routes to you
- Every convenience layer (Seamless, Uber Eats, Alexa) is a toll booth taking margin and data
- Health wearables will soon order food and products on your behalf — the human decision drops out entirely
- Brand is the answer: it's the one signal that survives AI mediation
The free distribution window is closing
- Posting on social networks is still free — that era is ending
- The phone will likely stop being the primary device within the decade; glasses and AR are coming
- Each medium shift reset who won: printing press → radio → TV → social; social is not the end state
- First-mover advantage on emerging platforms is real — most people who ignored TikTok in 2017 regret it
- Live social shopping (TikTok Shop, Whatnot, eBay Live) is already doing billions in GMV; it's the next 36–48 month window
- Whatnot alone does $3B in gross sales; most founders in the room had never heard of it
Two things to do right now — both free
- Build a comprehensive content plan across all seven platforms: TikTok, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube Shorts, Facebook, Twitter, and others — not just the one you're comfortable with
- Spend 50–100 hours researching AI: use ChatGPT to ask what AI means specifically for your industry; you learn AI by touching it, not reading about it
- Facebook proper is the most important platform for GaryVee's team right now — classic Facebook is resurging
- If you're already on social, the gap to AI feels smaller; if you're still on the sidelines, the jump keeps getting bigger
What the TikTok strategy actually looks like
- One dedicated full-time TikTok creator, focused on nothing else
- The content you expect to go viral won't; the "stupid" video will — you can't predict it, so volume is the strategy
- Real example from the event host: one video hit 2.2M views and 200K comments, leading to inbound from People Magazine and Newsweek — all organic, zero ad spend
- Thumbnail, first three seconds, copy, and platform-specific tactics matter — most people never develop these skills
- Most people in the room are on too few platforms and take the ones they're on for granted
Why people don't act — and the only real fix
- Resistance to new technology is disguised laziness, not principle — "I don't trust TikTok/China" is a reframe of "I don't want to do the work"
- Waiting until you need a skill to learn it is like eating badly for a year then trying to run a marathon
- Technology is undefeated: horses lost to cars, candles lost to electricity, Blackberry lost to touchscreen — every time
- The only word to replace "no" with is "maybe" — certainty kills upside in fast-moving environments
- Self-esteem is the prerequisite: if your foundation is broken, tactics don't land
Playing the long game
- GaryVee's media persona is a side project; VaynerMedia is 2,500 employees and ~$400M/year, built from scratch
- VFriends is a 30–40 year project — a Pokemon/Marvel-style IP world, with trading cards launching in hobby stores in May 2025
- Maximising for enjoyment of the process, not money, is what enables 12–17 hour days sustainably
- Falling in love with the trying — not the achieving — is the unlock for long-term financial results
- Playing long means leaving money on the table; that can look wrong for decades before it looks right
Control your inputs, control your outcomes
- Your social feed reflects what you've engaged with — it is not propaganda, it is a mirror
- Actively search and like positive content; your feed changes within days
- Limit negative inputs: news, toxic family, complaining peers — all chip away at the foundation needed to execute
- The moment you accept 100% accountability for your life, every goal becomes achievable
- Stop blaming circumstances — the age at which that excuse expires is now, regardless of what happened before
