ClickUp Timeline vs. Gantt view: key differences and when to use each
Executive overview
ClickUp's Timeline and Gantt views both show tasks at a glance across time, but they serve different use cases. Timeline is flexible for organising data — it lets you group by assignee, status, or custom fields, and is better suited for scheduling and resource planning. Gantt is built for project management — it locks you into your folder/list hierarchy and adds dependency visualisation, critical path, and richer field display.
Choose Timeline for scheduling flexibility; choose Gantt when dependencies and project structure matter.
Shared features across both views
- Both found under the plus view menu; both require Business plan (or Unlimited) for unlimited uses
- Filtering, search, and view-sharing options are identical across both
- Zoom controls exist in both, though they work differently
- Both display tasks as horizontal bars across a time axis
Timeline view: distinctive features
- Group by lets you create swim lanes by status, assignee, due date, or custom field
- Unscheduled/overdue tasks appear in a sidebar — drag directly onto the calendar to schedule
- Zoom levels limited to day, week, and month only
- Color coding restricted to list color or status only
- No dependency visualisation — dependent tasks appear with no indication of their relationship
- Cannot group by ClickUp list or folder hierarchy
Gantt view: distinctive features
- Dependencies are visualised with arrows; drag-and-drop to create or delete them directly in the view
- Live updates and rescheduled dependencies can be toggled on or off
- Critical path and slack time are available via Gantt tools
- Zoom levels extend to hour and year — required for shift scheduling or multi-year planning
- Columns can be added to the left sidebar, combining list view and Gantt in one screen
- Locks you into the existing folder/list/task hierarchy — no custom grouping
- Broader color-coding options including priority
The seven key differences at a glance
- Zoom range — Timeline: day/week/month only. Gantt: adds hour and year
- Group by — Timeline: flexible (assignee, status, custom fields). Gantt: hierarchy only
- List/folder grouping — Gantt shows items by their ClickUp hierarchy; Timeline ignores it
- Color coding — Gantt supports priority and more options; Timeline limited to list and status
- Dependency visualisation — Gantt shows arrows between dependent tasks; Timeline shows nothing
- Visual fields — Gantt adds a list-style column sidebar with full custom field display; Timeline cannot show custom field values
- Advanced settings — Gantt has live updates, dependency rescheduling, critical path, and slack time; Timeline does not
When to use each
- Use Timeline when organising people, shifts, or work across custom groupings — flexible scheduling and swim lanes are the priority
- Use Gantt when managing projects with dependencies, needing to see critical path, or requiring visibility into your ClickUp folder/list structure
