How Vikash built a $12K/month Photoshop plugin using customer pain as content fuel
Executive overview
Most founders chase views. Vikash ignores them. His Photoshop plugin, Bulk Mockup, earns $12K/month from YouTube videos with a few hundred views each.
The engine is a content flywheel: mine customer pain from real conversations, create targeted content around each problem, optimise for both YouTube and Google search. Each video becomes a permanent asset that compounds over time.
Solving one tiny problem for one specific customer is enough — if you talk to those customers obsessively.
From Upwork script to $12K/month product
- Discovered the idea automating mockup creation for a freelance client on Upwork
- Completed 1,800 mockups in 30 minutes — a job the client expected to take three days
- Sold the script for $300 on the spot; recognised immediately it was a scalable product
- First version was a hacky script with no licensing or user management; sold as a lifetime deal
- Once cash-positive, hired a developer on Upwork to polish the product into its current form
- Business model: monthly subscription, customers find the plugin via YouTube
The content flywheel
- Flywheel fuel is customer pain — not keyword research or trend-chasing
- Discover a real problem → create a video solving it → new customers arrive → reveal new problems → repeat
- Videos target long-tail problems; low view counts do not indicate low value
- Example: 370-view video generated 3 paying customers ($45 MRR from one asset)
- Every video sits on YouTube and Google indefinitely, compounding monthly
Step 1: harvesting customer pain (four touch points)
- Communities: lurk silently in forums where customers gather; list repeated pain points; start conversations only to get more context, never to sell
- Onboarding emails: ask new customers "Do you want a custom tutorial just for you?" — generates a steady stream of real, specific problems
- Customer support: treat support as an education channel; request the customer's file, record a custom tutorial or screen-share call; over three years this has produced 1,500+ recorded videos
- YouTube comments: find niche videos with high comment counts (unresolved pain); list all objections; create better content that answers them directly
Step 2: creating content
- Customer pain comes from real conversations, so audience and problem are already understood before recording starts
- No elaborate setup required — record the solution directly, skip the preamble
- Authenticity converts better than production quality
Step 3: distribution and search optimisation
- Optimise each video for Google as well as YouTube: keyword in title, description, and first 30 seconds of transcript
- 22% of Vikash's YouTube views come from Google search — Google surfaces video results ahead of blog posts for tutorial-style queries
- YouTube videos bypass the authority and backlink requirements that make Google SEO hard for new sites
Key principles
- A video with 300 views that converts 3 customers outperforms a viral video that converts none
- Support calls are a content goldmine — edge cases and real language that keyword tools never surface
- A good business idea saves time, saves money, or makes money; Bulk Mockup cuts a 30–40-minute manual task to under two minutes
- Niche and narrow beats broad: one plugin, one problem, one customer type
