Building a $1 email subscriber system with Facebook ads

Executive overview

Most email list growth via paid ads wastes money by asking for the email too early. The fix is a two-step funnel: drive cheap traffic to proven content, then retarget visitors with a focused opt-in page.

Drive cold traffic to your best articles first; capture emails only from warm retargeted visitors.

Finding the right articles to promote

  • Check Facebook Page Insights → Posts → sort by organic reach to find what already resonates.
  • Use BuzzSumo (free) to surface your top-shared URLs.
  • Only promote articles that are already popular — don't test content with paid traffic.

Building your target audience

  • Use Facebook Audience Insights, connect your page, and read the demographic breakdown.
  • Click Page Likes to find what else your audience follows (e.g. HubSpot, Tim Ferriss, Udemy).
  • Use those interest categories as ad targeting — match content to the interest (Tony Robbins article → Tony Robbins fans).

Setting up the traffic campaign

  • Campaign goal: link clicks, not conversions.
  • Target mobile only — desktop can cost 2–3x more per click.
  • Exclude Instagram placements; it ran 2x more expensive than Facebook + Audience Network.
  • Target the "big four" countries: USA, UK, Canada, Australia.
  • Upload your existing mailing list as a custom audience and exclude them.
  • Budget: $10/day to start; scale whichever article gets the cheapest CPC.
  • Run at least 4 ad variations (2 images × 2 headlines); cut the losers fast.
  • The single metric that matters at this stage: CPC (cost per click to the article).

Setting up retargeting to capture emails

  • Install the Facebook Pixel on your site; verify it with the Facebook Pixel Helper Chrome extension.
  • Create a custom audience: all site visitors, 180-day window.
  • Add a conversion event (CompleteRegistration) that fires when the opt-in form is submitted — this lets Facebook optimise for sign-ups, not just clicks.
  • Retargeting ad set: target all site visitors, exclude existing subscribers and anyone already converted.
  • Send retargeting traffic to a dedicated landing page with a single opt-in and nothing else.
  • Optimise for conversions (1-day click window), not link clicks.
  • Set a manual bid cap (~$1.25) or leave automatic; mobile-only again.

Optimising and scaling

  • Check ad comments weekly — negative comments suppress click-through from other users.
  • Add a pop-up (e.g. Sumo List Builder) and a content upgrade on the article itself; these are free captures that cut paid spend by ~30%.
  • Use the Breakdown → Platform view to confirm which placements are cheapest.
  • Audit new sign-ups: check open and click rates to confirm they match your target audience. If not, tighten targeting (Noah cut women after finding they weren't engaging with his content).
  • Expand reach by creating articles targeting adjacent interests your audience also follows.
  • Once the funnel is profitable, increase daily budget — the machine runs without changes for 2–4 weeks at a time.
