Eight steps to rebuild income and momentum from zero
Executive overview
Losing income creates a spiral: stress about bills kills the space needed to think clearly. The fix is sequential — stabilise cash first, then build toward something larger.
Start with what you already have: relationships, skills, and physical assets. Then layer in goals, confidence habits, and long-term moves like free work and audience-building.
The fastest path back is removing financial pressure first, then compounding small wins into opportunity.
Taking inventory of your assets
- Relationship ATMs: identify people in your network who run businesses or have paid you before
- Superpower inventory: list the specific skills you could sell — ask a close friend if unsure
- Physical assets: bikes, cameras, clothing — list everything sellable; offer to sell friends' items for a split
Setting 30- and 365-day goals
- Write a fictional story of where you want to be in one year — that becomes your 365-day target
- Build a 30-day plan of concrete actions that move toward that future goal
- Find an accountability buddy who will call you out; check in every Monday and Friday
Making money immediately
- Do delivery work (Uber Eats, DoorDash) to stabilise cash flow and remove bill pressure
- Sell every physical asset you identified in step one
- Return to past consulting or freelance clients; ask for work or referrals
Lowering your cost of living
- Negotiate or cancel every subscription and bill right now
- Move to cheaper or free housing — reduce the income threshold you must hit
- Refinance loans while rates are low
Applying for jobs differently
- Use your network to get referrals before applying cold
- Do 60–80 hours of prep for roles you really want — most candidates do almost none
- Bring proof of work to the application: a customer for a sales role, a marketing plan for a marketing role, a support audit for a support role
Building confidence through controllable actions
- Do at least one physical action each morning (e.g. 30 pushups) to start with a win
- Journal daily to process stress and stay organised
- Spend time with employed, busy people — your environment sets your expectations
Doing free work to open doors
- Identify people or companies you want to work with and create something useful for them unprompted
- Lead with genuine flattery; do not ask for anything in the same message
- Use the 80/20 rule: 80% of your time on paid work, 20% (Fridays) on free work that builds relationships and skills
Starting your tribe now
- Begin a newsletter, YouTube channel, or blog and commit to posting once a week for 52 weeks
- Documenting your journey publicly builds communication skills, expands your network, and differentiates you in hiring
- An audience built now becomes future customers — AppSumo launched into an audience built a decade earlier
