How to create linkable assets that attract backlinks repeatedly
Executive overview
Most pages attract no backlinks because they are not exceptional enough to earn them. Linkable assets are pages so good that other sites link to them organically and repeatedly.
Two problems to solve: finding a killer idea, and building a list of people likely to link. Both are resolved by studying what already earns links in your niche.
The core insight: your competitors' top-linked pages tell you exactly what to build and who to pitch.
Finding the right idea
- Use a tool like Ahrefs Site Explorer to pull the top pages of competitors, sorted by referring domains.
- Referring domains matter more than raw backlink count — 100 sites linking once beats one site linking 100 times.
- Scan titles and URLs of top pages to identify content formats that attract links (e.g., definitive guides, advanced tutorials).
- Look for patterns across multiple competitors to confirm what the niche rewards.
Evaluating what "good enough" looks like
- Open the top-linked pages and assess the quality bar: custom design, depth of content, strong visuals.
- Understand how much work it would take to produce something meaningfully better.
- If no great linkable asset exists in your niche yet, that is an advantage — you face no competition and can set the benchmark.
Building your outreach list
- Everyone linking to a competitor's linkable asset is a warm prospect for yours.
- Record all referring domains from the competitor page before you build anything.
- Once your asset is live, reach out showing how your version improves on the original.
