Five things every CEO must focus on

Executive overview

Most CEOs scatter their attention across too many priorities. Five responsibilities belong exclusively to the CEO and cannot be delegated.

The CEO's job is direction, people, cash, relationships, and strategy — everything else is noise.

The five CEO priorities

  1. Follow me — craft a 4–5 page vivid vision describing what the company looks like 3 years out; include core values, core purpose, and a BHAG
  2. Team — ensure the right people are in the right seats; maintain a virtual bench for each core role; know the org chart 1–2 years ahead
  3. Cash — treat cash like oxygen; build proper cash flow and budgeting systems before scaling; early-stage entrepreneurial systems will break at mid-size
  4. Key relationships — actively manage the partners, suppliers, investors, bankers, lawyers, and mentors who can make or break the company
  5. Networking, coaching, and strategy — stay in the strategic seat; think 1–3 years out; bring that perspective back to the leadership team
