Four human desires that drive aliveness, connection, purpose, and growth

Executive overview

Most people set goals but never live into the underlying desires those goals are meant to satisfy. Brendon Burchard identifies four core human desires — aliveness, deep connection, meaningful pursuits, and growth — and argues that routines are the mechanism for living those desires daily, not just chasing outcomes.

Goals without routines leave desire to chance. Growth without a plan beyond the goal leads to emptiness even after achievement.

The core insight: structure your routines around desires, not just outcomes — desire is the destination, routine is how you live there.

The four desires

  1. Aliveness — the felt sense of energy, presence, and vitality; expressed differently for each person (fitness, intimacy, spiritual peace, flow states)
  2. Deep connection — to other people, to yourself, to a higher power; the longest-running longevity study shows quality relationships are the top correlate of a long, vibrant life
  3. Meaningful pursuits — not just having purpose, but actively hunting it; languishing signals insufficient pursuit, not insufficient meaning
  4. Growth — the continuous expansion across all four areas; without it, bitterness, restlessness, and disengagement follow

Aliveness

  • Aliveness is not one thing — it includes physical vitality, intimacy, spiritual freedom, presence, and flow
  • Without aliveness, bitterness grows: resentment toward others who appear happy is a symptom of your own deficit
  • Ask: what are my daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly routines to ensure I have aliveness?
  • Presence is a form of aliveness — being fully here is itself a practice

Routines vs. habits vs. goals vs. tasks

  • A routine is a scheduled, intentional practice done daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly until it becomes automatic
  • A habit is what a routine becomes once it no longer requires conscious effort
  • A goal is an ambitious, specific, time-bound outcome — stretch is required
  • A task is something you simply need to do on a given day; it is not a goal
  • Common mistake: people fill goal journals with task lists, then wonder why nothing changes
  • Routines live the desire; goals target an outcome; tasks advance the day

Deep connection

  • Most life dissatisfaction traces back to relationship quality, not individual circumstances
  • Deep connection extends beyond people — to yourself, to God or the universe, to aligned states like flow or intimacy
  • Connection happens when two things reach the same frequency; you can create conditions for it but not force it
  • Write routines — not just goals — for relationships: what will you do daily, weekly, monthly, yearly to deepen them?
  • A relationship reduced to tasks and routines with no growth will eventually break

Meaningful pursuits

  • Meaning alone is not enough — the pursuit is the source of fulfillment
  • Many people lead objectively meaningful lives yet feel bored; the hunt is missing
  • The decision to be extraordinary (not just adequate) is what activates the pursuit
  • Choose projects intrinsically: the best pursuits generate aliveness and deepen connection simultaneously
  • Committing to the hunt — fully, not casually — is what separates languishing from engagement

Growth

  • Growth must be intentional across all four desires: aliveness, relationships, meaningful pursuits
  • Achieving a goal without a growth plan beyond it leads to emptiness — Olympians with gold medals report this
  • If growth is left to randomness, dissatisfaction is the result
  • Growth is not "climb one mountain, find another" as a platitude — it is a biological and psychological need
  • Teams and relationships both erode when people stop feeling they are growing
  • Everyone needs an explicit growth plan, not just goals
