Can you do digital marketing with only a smartphone?
Executive overview
Many tasks founders and marketers do daily are fully mobile-native. Some tasks — ads, SEO, keyword research — are painful enough on a phone that a desktop is effectively required.
A phone covers social media marketing completely; anything involving data, code, or campaign optimisation needs a desktop.
What works well on a phone
- Instagram: all core features including content creation and engagement were built for mobile
- TikTok: content creation and engagement are better on phone than desktop
- Short-form video (reels, shorts, selfies): phone cameras outperform many DSLRs for this use case
- Visual content creation via apps like Canva or Adobe Lightroom
- Social scheduling via Hootsuite, Buffer, or Facebook Page Manager
What requires a desktop
- Running and optimising ad campaigns
- SEO work: editing meta tags, title tags, image compression
- Keyword research (mobile versions of tools exist but are cumbersome)
- Writing and fully optimising blog posts
- Analysing stats and campaign data
