How Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity rank content differently

  • ChatGPT skews heavily toward high-authority publishers; median domain rating of top-cited pages is 90
  • OpenAI licensing deals with outlets like Forbes, Wired, and Business Insider reinforce this bias
  • Perplexity is the most aligned with traditional Google search — 28.6% of its citations come from Google's top 10
  • Google AI Mode and AI Overviews share only 13.7% citation overlap, despite answers being 86% semantically similar
  • AI Mode cites YouTube far more than Overviews, and pulls more heavily from Quora, Facebook, and Instagram

Where to focus first

  • Google AI features and ChatGPT account for the vast majority of AI search traffic; Perplexity is still a fraction
  • If already ranking well in Google, Perplexity offers the most immediate AI visibility gain
  • The link between Google rankings and AI Overview citations is weakening: top-10 overlap has dropped from 76% to ~38%
  • AI Overviews increasingly pull from outside the top 10 — YouTube and Reddit in particular
  • For ChatGPT visibility, editorial mentions on high-DR publisher sites matter more than your own page's Google ranking
  • Many top-cited AI search domains receive no traditional search traffic at all

Practical prioritisation

  • No need to build completely separate strategies — quality content, topical authority, and earned mentions help across all platforms
  • If ChatGPT drives traffic in your niche: target high-DR editorial sites and publishers
  • If AI Overviews matter more: prioritise YouTube and Reddit presence
  • Use tools like Ahrefs' Brand Radar (cited domains report, filtered by platform) to see where your brand appears on each platform
