The GWC flow channel: keeping people in the challenge-skills sweet spot

Executive overview

When you delegate to someone whose skills don't yet match the challenge, they fall into stress and anxiety. When their skills outgrow the challenge, they slide into boredom. Both states look similar — avoidance, procrastination, erratic behaviour.

The GWC flow channel (Get It, Want It, Capacity to Do It) is the zone where challenge and skill are balanced. The leader's job is to keep each person in that zone continuously — adding challenge incrementally as skills grow.

Slightly exceeding someone's current skill set drives growth; overshooting it shuts them down.

The three GWC states

  • In the channel: challenge and skill are matched — person gets it, wants it, has capacity to perform
  • Stress zone: challenge far exceeds current skill — person appears disengaged, anxious, erratic
  • Boredom zone: skill has grown past the challenge — person procrastinates, avoids, disengages

Managing the flow channel over time

  • Delegate incrementally — a small stretch above current skill, not a large leap
  • Too large a gap can suppress core-values behaviour; the person isn't disengaged, they're overwhelmed
  • As skill develops, the person returns to the channel naturally
  • Then add the next increment of challenge to prevent boredom
  • Repeat: the goal is continuous movement along the channel, not a single calibration
