Six ways to improve your Amazon product listing SEO

Executive overview

Amazon's A10 search engine ranks products primarily on sales velocity and keyword mastery. Most sellers lose ground not on price or reviews, but on poorly optimised listings.

Fix the listing fundamentals and visibility compounds.

The gap most sellers miss: keyword placement and listing completeness, not ad spend.

Amazon's A10 ranking factors

  • Sales velocity — how fast a product sells drives ranking more than anything else
  • Keyword mastery — how well your listing uses relevant, high-traffic search terms
  • Price and reviews matter, but most sellers already optimise those; listing quality is the bigger gap

Keyword research

  • Type words and phrases into the Amazon search box and note the autocomplete suggestions
  • Use Ubersuggest to surface trending keywords pulled from Amazon and other sources
  • Use Answer the Public for additional demand signals
  • The Ubersuggest Chrome extension shows search volume directly on Amazon results pages

Product title

  • Match the title to the physical packaging label
  • Aim for 60–80 characters
  • Use numerals, not all caps, no subjective terms like "best seller"
  • Mismatched titles drive bad reviews and returns, which tank rankings

Descriptions and key features

  • Include brand name, size, material, colour, packaging, and quantity
  • Specificity improves both keyword coverage and conversion
  • Use up to five bullet points in the key features section; 1,000 characters total across all five
  • Use only what's necessary — don't stuff characters to chase keywords

Images

  • Show the product in use, from multiple angles, highlighting different features
  • White background; product fills at least 85% of the image space
  • Use 500×500 or 1,000×1,000 pixels
  • Six images plus one video is the target; at minimum one image is required
  • Include functional details such as nutrition labels where relevant

Product search terms

  • Use generic words; no punctuation needed
  • Stay under the 250-byte limit
  • Follow Amazon's own search terms best practices guide for the full ruleset
