Slack productivity tips: 17 shortcuts and settings to save time

Executive overview

Most Slack users click through menus and miss the keyboard shortcuts that cut navigation time to seconds. Knowing a handful of commands eliminates context-switching and notification noise.

Master the keyboard shortcuts and notification settings, and Slack becomes a tool you control rather than one that controls you.

Keyboard shortcuts for navigation and messaging

  • /<message> @name from any input box: sends a direct message without leaving your current channel
  • Shift + Option + Down: jump to your last unread message
  • Command + [: go back to the previous message view
  • Option + Up/Down: move between conversations
  • Command + K: open the quick-switcher to jump to any person or channel
  • Option + Command + F: open search directly

Managing messages

  • Star important items (passwords, links, references) — accessible any time from the starred items panel
  • Up arrow on a sent message: edit it inline without retyping
  • + :emoji_name:: auto-adds a reaction to your most recent message
  • > text: creates an inline quote block
  • Hold Shift while clicking multiple emoji reactions to add them all at once
  • Pin messages to a channel for shared reference (similar to starred, but channel-visible)

Notification and distraction settings

  • Command + ,: open Preferences from any Mac app
  • Turn off all notifications by default; check Slack intentionally instead of reactively
  • Set Do Not Disturb during work hours so you control when you engage
  • Mute channels via channel settings to silence non-essential chatter
  • Enable highlight words to get notified only when specific terms (project names, "lunch") appear
  • Turn on All Unreads view so everything unread is surfaced in one place at the top

Reminders and quick notes

  • Type remind me in [time] to [task] directly in any message box — Slack's built-in reminder
  • Use Slackbot as a scratchpad: type notes to yourself and they persist there indefinitely
  • Command + ?: shows all available keyboard shortcuts at any time
