Writing informational blog posts that quietly generate affiliate revenue
Executive overview
Informational content can earn affiliate commissions even when it has no obvious commercial angle. The key is matching search intent first, then weaving in product recommendations where they solve a genuine problem.
Affiliate bloggers who master search intent and product-led content turn how-to posts into silent profit generators.
Matching search intent before writing
- Search intent is the reason behind a query — get it wrong and you won't rank.
- Identify intent by looking at what Google already ranks for your target keyword.
- Top-ranking pages reveal the format Google prefers: listicle, tutorial, or definition post.
- A keyword with "how to" doesn't automatically require a step-by-step guide — top results may be listicles.
Listicle template
- Use for non-chronological lists: tips, tools, techniques, mistakes, product picks.
- Intro goal: build trust quickly in as few words as possible; readers are there for the list.
- Include a table of contents with jump links — listicles must be skimmable.
- H2s should be descriptive and enticing, not bare labels (e.g. "Eat spicy foods to burn more calories", not "Eat spicy foods").
- Use a mini-template per list point for consistency: why it works → how it works → action step.
- Conclusion: one key takeaway and internal links to related posts.
Step-by-step tutorial template
- Use for chronological how-to guides where sequence matters.
- Write the intro using the PSP method: Problem → Solution → Proof.
- H2s become the numbered steps (e.g. "Step 1: Map out a hierarchy of topics").
- Keep the conclusion short — tutorials run long; end with internal links to next logical reads.
Expanded definition post template
- Use for "what is" or "what are" queries; structure: define the concept → expand into subtopics.
- Title format: "What is [concept]?" plus a clarifying subtitle.
- For subtopics, mine Google's People Also Ask, related keywords in a tool like Ahrefs, and H2s of top-ranking pages.
- Intro delivers the definition immediately; the rest of the post is the detail layer.
- Conclusion summarises key learnings and links to beginner-level follow-on content.
Turning informational posts into affiliate revenue
- Product-led content solves a problem using a specific product — naturally creating a recommendation.
- As an affiliate, write product-led content for other companies' products and host it on your own site.
- Example: a post on how to winterise a sprinkler system naturally requires an air compressor — an uncommonly owned item readers may buy via your affiliate link.
- The product mention must be organic; it should arise from the problem, not be forced in.
