How to get on top podcasts and monetise every appearance
Executive overview
Most people try to get on big podcasts by asking. That doesn't work. The top shows look for guests who already outperform on smaller podcasts.
Three things determine whether a podcast appearance translates to revenue: a hook pitch that works in 30 seconds, a product ecosystem that captures demand, and the patience to climb the podcast pyramid from the bottom.
Build the ecosystem before you go on the show — the audience has nowhere to go without it.
The hook pitch: name, same, fame, pain, aim, game
- Name: your name and business name
- Same: a familiar category (entrepreneur, author, coach, agency owner)
- Fame: one credible signal — books, awards, recognisable clients
- Pain: the problem your audience faces
- Aim: what you're resolving short-term
- Game: the bigger vision behind your work
- All six fit in under 40 seconds; gives the host multiple threads to pull
The product ecosystem
- A gift requires no registration — free content, scorecards, PDF reports
- A product for prospects requires registration — webinars, live events, discussion groups, extended assessments
- A core offering is a paid transformational product — accelerator, agency, publishing
- A product for clients is subscription revenue — SaaS, ongoing tools
- Without this in place, podcast attention evaporates within a week
The podcast pyramid
- ~100,000 active podcasts exist; only a dozen consistently reach 1M+ views
- Start at the 100–1,000 view tier to build skills, stories, and comfort with the format
- Your job at every tier: make your episode outperform the host's typical numbers
- Promote to your email list, socials, and DMs — do not leave promotion to the host
- Work up through tiers: 1K–5K, 5K–25K, 25K–100K, 100K+
- Top shows scout guests by looking at who is outperforming on mid-tier podcasts
- Skipping tiers is the common mistake; patience compounds like athletic development
