US Workplace Posters: What Employers Must Display and Why

Employers in the US are legally required by the Department of Labor to display specific labor law posters in visible, common areas. Six federal posters apply to every business regardless of size or location, and additional state, city, and county requirements layer on top. Failing to post or update these posters can trigger fines ranging from $110 to $10,000 per poster, up to $17,000 total. Laws can change mid-year, so annual reviews alone are not sufficient.
Required federal posters
- Fair Labor Standards Act — minimum wage and overtime rules
- Family and Medical Leave Act — FMLA rights for eligible employees
- OSHA — workplace safety and health rights
- Employee Polygraph Protection Act — restricts lie-detector use
- USERRA — reemployment rights for military service members
- Know Your Rights: Workplace Discrimination Is Illegal — required by the EEOC
Compliance rules to know
- Posters must be placed where workers commonly gather; large employers may need multiple locations
- Free copies in multiple languages are available from the DOL
- State requirements vary by state and also by city and county within a state
- Update whenever laws change — do not wait for an annual cycle
- Fines vary per poster; repeat violators face the maximum penalties
