Twenty rules for building wealth and a life worth living

Executive overview

Most people climb hard toward goals they never chose deliberately, then arrive and find the ladder was against the wrong wall. The rules below are a distilled framework for designing success on purpose — covering mindset, relationships, physicality, and execution.

The core insight: the work you've been avoiding is exactly where your results are hiding.

The 20 rules

  1. Don't lean your ladder against the wrong wall. Plan for success or you'll live by default, not design. Don't get good at something you hate.
  2. No one needs to change for you to win. Find people who support your vision. Do the work yourself — you control 100% of your outcomes that way.
  3. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Shortcuts and bad partners teach expensive lessons. Start with integrity from day one.
  4. Avoid difficult conversations, create a difficult life. Success lives on the backside of hard conversations. Speak your preferences; ask for feedback.
  5. Stop being so freaking serious. Discipline and fun are not opposites. Top performers want to work with people who make them laugh. You win in spite of the seriousness, not because of it.
  6. Success is not final and failure is not fatal. The journey is the privilege. Failure is a lesson. Extract it, move forward, give the setback zero negative energy.
  7. Stop waiting for the right moment — make the moment right. Take ownership. Start before conditions are perfect. Action creates the moment; the moment doesn't create the action.
  8. Go alone to go fast; go together to go far. Speed suits solo work. Building something durable requires other people. Learn to recruit, involve, and co-create like your life depends on it.
  9. The best revenge is massive success. Use doubt from others as fuel. Keep commitments to yourself in private, every day. The goal: develop enough grace to help the doubter when they eventually ask.
  10. The results you're looking for are in the work you've been avoiding. "The cave you fear to enter most holds the treasure you seek." Doing hard work is what shapes you to receive what you've been building toward.
  11. Don't shrink yourself to make others comfortable. Playing small to avoid making people uncomfortable costs you the extraordinary life. Be OK being misunderstood for long periods.
  12. Fear will always give bad advice. Fear is false evidence appearing real. Ask: what needs to be true for me to move forward without fear? Create from abundance, not scarcity.
  13. Exhaust the body, tame the mind. Physical stress clears mental noise. Build fitness and delayed gratification at 20, and the compounding effect reaches your bank account.
  14. Not everyone will be happy for your success — and that's OK. Your winning reveals where others have pulled back. Stay close to people who want more for you than more from you.
  15. Consistency can fix 90% of your problems. Consistency is the foundation everything else is built on. The challenge: do the boring work for a thousand days without missing.
  16. Nobody cares about your story until you win. Don't chase praise. Make decisions without external validation. Wins make people forget all the setbacks.
  17. The pain you feel today creates the strength you feel tomorrow. Every failed company, every frustration, builds armor for the next level. The size of your problems dictates the size of your life.
  18. Peace begins when expectations end. Perfectionism is the obstacle, not the asset. Pursue progress. Be blissfully dissatisfied — desire more while celebrating how far you've come.
  19. You receive what you desire for others. The moment success becomes about helping others rather than yourself, it compounds. Desire for others what you desire for yourself.
  20. The world will show you where you're not free. Frustration and triggers are assignments. Get curious instead of reactive. Every obstacle is an invitation to break free from old patterns.
