Six workarounds for recurring tasks in Monday.com
Executive overview
Monday.com has no native recurring task feature. Every workaround involves automations that simulate recurrence by duplicating groups, resetting statuses, or pushing dates.
The presenter walks through six options in order of complexity. Most involve tradeoffs between setup effort, board clutter, and flexibility. The cleanest solution for mixed-cadence boards is a frequency label column combined with conditional automations. The presenter's actual recommended fix is to upvote Monday's community feature request.
The real answer is that Monday needs to build this natively — the workarounds exist only until it does.
Workaround 1: duplicate groups
- Create separate board groups per cadence (daily, weekly, monthly, etc.).
- Set up one time-based automation per cadence: every X period, duplicate that group.
- Result: a new copy of all tasks in that group is created on schedule.
- Downside: board fills up with duplicate groups quickly; messy at scale.
Workaround 2: board-wide status reset
- Works when every item on the board shares the same recurrence interval.
- Automation trigger: status changes to "Done".
- Actions: push due date back by X days, then reset status to active.
- Limitation: all items must share one cadence — no per-task flexibility.
Workaround 3: create new items on a schedule
- Time-based automation creates a brand-new item at a set interval.
- Useful if you want a distinct record for each occurrence (e.g. daily journal entry).
- Less useful if you want to track the same persistent task over time.
Workaround 4: recurring notifications
- Automation fires a notification to a user on a schedule.
- Monday's own docs suggest this, but the presenter is not a fan.
- Adds noise; requires a separate automation per reminder.
- No status or date tracking — just a ping.
Workaround 5: frequency label column (recommended workaround)
- Add a single-select column to every item with values like Daily, Weekly, Fortnightly, Monthly.
- Automation trigger: status changes to "Done" AND frequency label equals a specific value.
- Actions: reset status to active, push due date by the matching interval, log an update for audit trail.
- Duplicate the automation for each frequency value, adjusting the condition and push interval.
- Scales well; one label field controls all cadences without extra groups.
Workaround 6: upvote the feature request
- A feature request exists on Monday's community forum asking for native recurring tasks.
- At time of recording it had only 55 votes despite broad user demand.
- The presenter's actual recommendation: find the link and upvote it.
