Building executive presence with the IMAGE framework
Executive overview
Executive presence is often cited in performance reviews but rarely defined clearly. It is the ability to attract opportunities, align teams, and amplify influence through intentional communication and behaviour.
The IMAGE framework gives a five-step structure: Identity, Managed appearance, Act with poise, Gain trust, Exude authority.
Executive presence starts from within — clarity of identity is the non-negotiable foundation.
The IMAGE framework: five principles
- Imagine your executive identity — Define who you want to become, not just what you need to do. Sustainable executive behaviour requires a clear internal identity that no organisation can dictate for you.
- Manage a polished appearance — Goes beyond attire. How you show up energetically — confidence, groundedness, directional clarity — is increasingly more important than superficial presentation.
- Act with poise — Poise is internal, not just physical. Emotional volatility, fear of criticism, and concern about others' opinions destroy poise. Clear values and mission-driven focus enable it.
- Gain trust through connection — Real connection means attunement to others' values, priorities, and experiences. Trust built this way is voluntary and inspires — not coerced through authority or fear.
- Exude authority in communication — Gravitas is how others perceive you. When identity, appearance, poise, and connection are in place, communication naturally carries authority. People trust your recommendations and decisions.
Key distinctions
- Presence is your essence — others sense it; it cannot be performed from the outside in.
- Poise has a superficial component (posture, stillness) but its real source is internal emotional stability.
- Connection is not networking; it is bringing your whole self and allowing others to bring theirs.
- Confidence is self-perception; gravitas is others' perception of you.
