How to find and hire the best AI marketers for your team
Executive overview
Finding strong AI marketers is not a one-step job post — it requires identifying people who are already publicly building and sharing results with AI tools. The fastest path is engaging with practitioners in the wild: on blogs, podcasts, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Recruiting top talent is a relationship game; closing too early scares people off. The best AI marketers are often engineers or tool-builders, not traditional marketers.
Find practitioners already talking publicly about AI
- Search for people blogging, podcasting, or posting on Twitter/Instagram about AI marketing
- Reach out to start a conversation, not a pitch — ask what they are doing with keyword automation or bid management
- Talking to active practitioners teaches you who gets real results, not just who sounds informed
- These people may be freelancers, contractors, or full-time employees elsewhere — all are viable hires
Build relationships before recruiting
- Top candidates often take 3–6 months or even 2 years to convert — start early
- On LinkedIn, ask "do you know anyone like you who'd be interested?" rather than pitching directly
- Indirect approaches surface self-nominations without triggering defensiveness
- Mirror the Elon Musk / Twitter approach: identify who is "all in" and hardcore, not just available
Mine AI tool companies for talent
- Track AI tool announcements on Google, TechCrunch, and AI directories
- Find employees at those companies on LinkedIn who know the tools deeply
- Interview them around integration questions: what can you automate, how would you upskill the existing team, how do you prevent people reverting to old habits?
- These hires act as internal enablers, not just individual contributors
Consider engineers over traditional marketers
- AI is fundamentally technology — sometimes the right hire is an engineer, not a marketer
- Engineers who built or deeply used AI tools can set up systems that the whole marketing team leverages
- The goal is team-wide AI adoption, not a single AI-savvy marketer working in isolation
