How to use the Ahrefs SEO toolbar for research and prospecting
Executive overview
The Ahrefs SEO toolbar surfaces page and domain-level SEO metrics directly inside Google SERPs and any webpage you browse. It eliminates the need to open separate tools for quick keyword, backlink, and traffic checks.
Passive browsing becomes active research: the toolbar flags opportunities you'd otherwise scroll past.
SERP overlay features
- Inline keyword metrics (volume, country-selectable) appear instantly for any search query
- Per-result page metrics: URL Rating, backlinks, referring domains, estimated traffic, keyword count
- Domain-level metrics on the right — useful for scanning guest post targets without clicking through
- Click any metric to open the full Ahrefs report (Keywords Explorer, backlink report, etc.)
- Traffic and keyword counts reflect all countries, not just the selected one — reveals full topic potential
Browsing outside Google
- Toolbar activates on any page, not just Google or Bing results
- Spot high-traffic, low-backlink pages while reading blogs, Amazon, Wikipedia, or Quora
- Example use: a Reader's Digest hairstyles page showed 40k monthly visitors, 32k ranking keywords, only 22 referring domains — a low-competition signal
- Clicking the backlinks or keywords count opens the relevant Ahrefs report instantly
Customisation and standby mode
