How to lead and work with Enneagram Type 1 perfectionists
Executive overview
Enneagram Type 1s (the Perfectionist or Improver) are principled, conscientious, and hardworking. Their core drive is to improve themselves, others, and the world around them. Every type has a superpower; for a One, it is spotting errors and raising quality. That superpower becomes a liability when unchecked — rigidity, procrastination, and demoralising teammates.
Leverage a One's improvement instinct deliberately and give them the feedback structures they need to thrive.
Working with Type 1s: what to do
- Ask them directly: "How can we improve this project?" — it activates their joy and aligns with their identity
- Pull them aside privately for any critical feedback; never criticise in public
- Channel their error-spotting into quality control roles — editing, legal, accounting, event coordination
- Tell them explicitly when their standards make the whole team look better; they need to hear it
- Set a clear "done" threshold and give them permission to move on
Working with Type 1s: what to avoid
- Don't let them stall indefinitely waiting for perfection before starting — procrastination driven by fear of imperfection looks out of character but is common
- Don't allow them to redo colleagues' work to meet their own standards; it destroys team morale
- Don't let them recheck work in endless loops — redirect them to the next task
- Don't mistake their high standards for controlling behaviour; they are harder on themselves than on anyone else
