Only fools rush in: compete where you have a monopoly on yourself

Original source details coming soon.

Executive overview

Modern society feels broken, but we overlook how extraordinary human cooperation actually is. Epictetus teaches that a good person is invincible — not by overpowering opponents, but by only entering contests they can win.

The principle: choose your battles by competing only where winning is within your control. Be the red thread, not another thread. You have a monopoly on being you — don't forfeit it by imitating others or chasing what everyone else wants.

The only undefeatable strategy is to compete on your own terms, in the domain only you can own.

Human cooperation deserves more credit

  • Imagine predators locked in a metal tube (an airplane) for hours — only humans manage this without bloodshed
  • Dr. Laurie Santos: humans cooperate at a level essentially no other species has achieved
  • Marcus Aurelius' Rome handled the Antonine Plague far worse than modern societies handled COVID
  • The founding fathers, steeped in classical virtue, could not have imagined today's international alliances — or abolishing slavery
  • Our negativity bias makes problems feel worse than they are; noticing the good takes deliberate practice

The Stoic principle of reasoned choice

  • Epictetus: "A good person is invincible — for they don't rush into contests in which they aren't the strongest"
  • Martial arts principle: strength should not go against strength
  • Saying yes to whatever comes your way, or letting others put you on the spot, is a form of rushing in
  • Reasoned choice means thinking hard before committing, then making yourself unbeatable in that arena
  • Discretion is the better part of valor — choosing your battles is not weakness

Competing where you have a monopoly

  • Peter Thiel: the whole point of business is to find where you're the only one doing something
  • Blue Ocean Strategy: red oceans are crowded with competition; find uncontested water instead
  • Agrippinus (from Lives of the Stoics): "I want to be the red thread in the sweater, not like the other threads"
  • Frank Gehry to architecture students: everyone's signature looks different — that difference is you; stay with it
  • When you try to be like someone else, you lose; when you are yourself, you win even if you "lose"
  • You can always win if you only enter competitions where winning is up to you
