Resource page link building: finding and qualifying prospects at scale
Executive overview
Resource pages exist specifically to link out to helpful content — making them far easier to pitch than editorial placements. The two-step process is: find resource pages at scale, then send targeted outreach. Most practitioners stop at Google search operators; this system goes further by reverse-engineering the link profiles of competitors already listed on those pages.
The leverage point: pages that already appear on one resource page are likely listed on many others — mine their backlinks to multiply your prospect list.
Finding resource pages with search operators
- Use Google inurl/intitle operators (e.g.
inurl:links.html intitle:fitness) - Swap URL footprints:
links.php,resources.html, etc. - Swap topic terms to generate fresh result sets
- Scrape URLs using Scraper for Chrome (XPath) or the Ahrefs SEO toolbar export
Filtering prospects with Screaming Frog
- Run scraped URLs through Screaming Frog in List Mode
- Filter to: status 200, indexable pages, 3+ unique external outlinks
- Exclude low-value domains (e.g. Blogspot) via URL filter
- Add a domain rating filter (e.g. DR 30+) if using Ahrefs API integration
- Open surviving URLs via openallurls.com for manual spot-check; mark rejects with X
Multiplying prospects via reverse engineering
- Run a fresh Screaming Frog crawl on your vetted resource pages
- Bulk-export external links; convert destination URLs to root domains, removing duplicates
- Run those domains through Ahrefs Batch Analysis, sorted by dofollow referring domains
- On promising domains, open Site Explorer → Backlinks → filter by your footprint (e.g.
links.html) - This surfaces additional resource pages without another Screaming Frog crawl — use the external outlink count (EXD column) to pre-qualify
